The Perfect Technical Screen: A Guide for Candidates and Managers
A good technical screen is a calibrated instrument, not a trivia round. Here is the structure both sides should expect.

Define the signal before the questions
Write down the three capabilities the role genuinely needs, then design one probe per capability. Anything that does not map to a capability is a preference test in disguise.
For managers: score on trade-offs
Ask candidates to defend a decision under a constraint you change mid-answer. How someone revises a position tells you more than whether their first answer matched your notes.
For candidates: narrate your reasoning
State assumptions aloud, name the trade-off you are choosing, and quantify impact where you can. Silence reads as uncertainty even when the answer is correct.
Close with calibration
Both sides should leave knowing the next step and the timeline. An unclosed screen is the most common reason a strong pipeline stalls.
